Not-so-fun stitches

It has been an interesting couple of weeks around these parts. Two weeks ago today, I went to the dermatologist to check out a spot on my nose (it walked like a zit, talked like a zit, but it didn't heal like a zit.) It turned out to be basal cell carcinoma- the wimpy skin cancer, as my dermatologist put it. Thankfully, I was able to have it removed on Friday and now I'm healing. I had Mohs surgery and a nice plastic surgeon gave me my own set of beautiful blue stitches. Hopefully in a while, my nose will be as good as new and just have a little faint line reminding me to wear sunscreen.

Please, please, PLEASE wear your sunscreen. Slather your kids in it. I wish I had been more diligent back in the day. I knew that, because of my propensity to burn and the number of really, really bad burns, I was at risk. I am amazed that I ever tried to tan, but I did try. Usually, that led to burning, peeling, and no tan at all. I even went to the tanning salon when I was 17 so that I'd look better in my white prom dress. I really did not enjoy admitting that to the dermatologist. I didn't think that meant surgery at 38, but here I am, thankful that it was a bcc (oh, the new terms I've learned!) and not something else. I'll be seeing much more of my dermatologist and hopefully will stay slightly ahead of any other future spots.

I was in denial until the very end- on the day of the surgery, I asked if maybe the biopsy had removed all of the cancer (hey, we can skip all of this silly surgery business!) Nice try...

One more thing... sorry about the soapbox, but if you have a spot that looks strange or doesn't heal quickly, or comes back over and over, please get it checked out. I made my appointment and almost cancelled it (so busy at work, etc.) but now I am so glad I went.

Here I am with a very attractive bandage. Noses are hard to bandage!

In more fun news, I finished my May blocks for the Modern Stash Bee (I'm in the Friends Hive.) These were pretty fun, but there was some ripping. I thought I knew the 1/4" setting on my machine, but I was wrong!

Hope you are having a nice weekend! I am definitely grateful for the sacrifices of our brave military.

Sew South!

Sew South was last weekend and, in a word, it was AWESOME. I had never been to any sewing retreat, conference, or show in the past, so I wasn't at all sure what to expect. I was very excited to have an entire long weekend to sew and learn new things, but I was nervous.

First stop was the field trip to We're Sew Creative. It was great to see everyone wandering around, picking up their treasures, asking for opinions... fun! I could tell right away (to quote many, many other Sew Southers) "these are my people!" Many of us were overwhelmed by the notions walls, the fabric, the fat quarters... it was great!

Next stop- Ikea! More overload for me! I love Ikea. I could live in that store! I tried their swedish meatballs for the first time- not bad!

After Ikea, it was back to the hotel... in my case, it was then back home to check on the pup and then a quick turnaround back to the hotel. We had a fun cocktail party (I almost missed it because of my errand, but I was able to get back just in time for a quick drink and then it was on to dinner.) A group of us walked over to the mall and enjoyed Chipotle for dinner- it was good - and filling!

On Friday, we had a paper piecing workshop taught by Jennifer of Ellison Lane Quilts, the director of Sew South. Jennifer did a great job explaining how to paper piece, shared lots of great pictures, and helped the newbies a bunch! I am a complete paper piecing novice, but I was able to finish the great star block before the weekend was up! Woo hoo! We then moved on to THE DUFFEL.

I was afraid of the duffel. I wasn't sure that I could do it. I broke a whole lot of needles and asked a whole lot of questions and made a whole lot of mistakes, but I finished it up! Woo hoo! I think I could do it again- and likely do a much better job- but it was such a great feeling of accomplishment to finish it up around 1am on Saturday. When it was done, I was so very proud and it is an awesome bag- nice and big and holds a ton and sturdy as can be! Lindsey from LR Stitched taught us how to make the duffel, sharing tips and tricks and a ton of encouragement! She was awesome and is a natural teacher! (Cherie from StudioCherie generously gave us all a copy of her pattern- you can find it here http://www.etsy.com/shop/StudioCherie)

On Saturday morning, we started with the kiss clutch, taught by the wonderful Diane! I was intimidated by the clutch, but it came together beautifully! Getting the fabric into the frame was a little challenging, but doable and the result was beautiful! There are a bunch of great clutch photos- it was amazing to see them all done!

In the afternoon, we moved on to PJ pants, taught by Jennifer from We're Sew Creative. I had made pants a long time ago, so I remembered what to do- mostly! The thing I forgot is that patterns are usually cut larger than stated. I'm still not sure why that is.... I am loving my PJ pants! I need to take in the elastic a bit, but otherwise, they are great! (I used a vintage sheet for my PJ pants and they are truly the softest PJ pants I've ever worn!) Now I know why I've been hoarding vintage sheets from Goodwill... ;)

Saturday evening, after dinner, Leah Day spoke to us about Free Motion Quilting and so much more. She was amazingly inspirational. I really enjoyed hearing her share her FMQ tips and also her outlook on life. She is so real, so honest- and so encouraging.

We finished off the weekend on Sunday morning. There was no sewing on Sunday... we got together to say goodbye and there were lots of tears shed by lots of us. I can only speak for myself, and hopefully I'll make sense when I describe why I was emotional. The energy in the ballroom the entire weekend was positive, encouraging, and kind. We were all doing what we love to do, and having fun together. We were able to put our normal lives and responsibilities on hold and just hang out and sew and eat our meals together and get to know each other.... it was wonderful. I felt like we were able to share our joy the entire weekend, even through broken needles and sewing and unsewing... it was great!

I haven't even mentioned the swaps- we had a Secret Sister Swap which was great fun, a Fat Quarter swap (I didn't participate because I wasn't sure that my FQs were swap-worthy!) and a sample swap (I did not participate in this, but it looked like a ton of fun!)

Jennifer did a FANTASTIC job putting the weekend together for us. No detail was left undone. I can't imagine how much work she put in to get this weekend together. She is truly amazing!

The sponsors of Sew South were incredibly generous. I could not believe the gifts they provided to us! Everything from awesome Oliso irons to use during the weekend, to a new rotary cutter for all participants (I really liked the cutter and the personal sized cutting mat was great at our tables for paper piecing and trimming- thank you Dritz/Omnigrid!), thread, patterns, books, magazines, interfacing, fusible fleece (thank you, Pellon!), fabric (thank you Westminster and Allison Glass!), and awesome sugar scrub (thank you to Old Red Barn Co.) The sugar scrub smells so darned good and it works wonders- I have some seriously dry skin and it is awesome. You can take a peek at and buy your own sugar scrub here: http://www.oldredbarnco.com/store/WsDefault.asp?Cat=SugarScrubs

I will pick up my ticket the day they go on sale for the next Sew South for sure!

Here are the amazing gifts from the sponsors (except the sugar scrub- I have been using that since the day I got home!)

I also received amazing gifts from my Secret Sister (thank you, Holli (a.k.a. NautiSticher!) including pins, adorable stickers which are decorating my machine, a cool and very useful measuring gauge, washi tape, thread, pins... she totally spoiled me! I loved when I would leave my machine and come back and find a surprise! It was so fun!

Hope you are doing well and if you get the chance to come to Sew South next time, you definitely should! It was incredible!

Here is a picture of the goodies I made...

Feathers!

Hello! Hope you are having a great weekend. I am so glad that the sun is finally out here in Charlotte- it felt like all it did last week was rain or threaten to rain. It's nice and warm out, too! Perfect! Maybe it's time to put away the Winter coat after all?

I finished up some feather blocks for the Modern Stash Bee- they were fun to put together! I mailed them off to Liz in England yesterday- I am so glad that there is a post office close to me that stays open until 4pm on Saturday... makes life much easier when you have to mail internationally.

Today was spent cleaning... so gratifying when it's done, but the doing... not so fun. Thankfully one of the radio stations was playing 80's music today, so that made it more fun. I knew all the words to almost all of the songs. I can't believe the 80's were so long ago... can you? Feels like yesterday.

On the cleaning front, I have a quick tip for those of you with glass shower doors. Aren't they a hoot to clean? I was looking online and found a bunch of stuff that kind of worked or didn't work at all, but then... one worked! (Of course, I advise you to test it on a small part of your door in case it doesn't work well or scratches.) Without further ado- the magic potion is Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner! I used the pink kind that's a paste- it comes with a red and black sponge. They sell it at Harris Teeter, and you can find coupons in the paper sometimes, too. Anyhoo, it worked. That cloudy haze? Gone. Love it.

Hope you are having a fun weekend!

Happy Saturday

Hello! I had a fun Friday night- a bunch of friends came over for a Favorite Things party. We had a great time- lots of laughs and we got to share some of our favorite things and how we use them. Some of the favorite things: Tide Pods (so convenient), Canvas organizing cubes (love organization!), adorable Christmas decorations (snow globes, Santas, snowmen), Middle Sister Moscato wine, cute little egg shaped lip balms, hanging organizers for holding jewelry for easy viewing when getting ready in the morning, Tazo chai tea, Suave Keratin dry shampoo, and thick hand cream. It was fun! There is also a huge hunk of Olive Garden lasagna left over and 4 huge hunks of cake left over. Waste not, want not, right? I'm going to try to work at those leftovers today.

Today, Scrambles and I are getting in some sleep and sewing and hopefully one of us will be going to see Identity Thief later tonight. Very excited about that- I love Melissa McCarthy. I thought she totally stole the show in Bridesmaids. Maybe I should watch that movie again this afternoon...

Here is a picture of scrambles and I on the couch this morning. My PJ pants are 13 years old! They are from Old Navy back in 1999- those are little champagne bottles that say "Old Navy 2000" on them. My awesome stepsister gave them to me way back then and I'm still wearing them. The fact that they still fit is a small miracle in itself. Hooray for elastic waists!

On the sewing front, I finished my house block for Sew South. We are going to put all of our blocks together into a quilt/wall hanging to donate to the Charlotte Ronald McDonald house. I think it's going to look awesome- there are so many talented quilters making awesome blocks. I think mine came out OK- that is a little robot in the doorway. I am hoping that the disappearing ink line you see actually does disappear.

Hope you are having a great weekend!

A new family member and a new block....

Without further ado, please meet our newest family member! We adopted her yesterday. She is in need of a new name (we weren't very fond of the name she had, so we're working on choosing a new one.) Any ideas or suggestions? So far, she is sweet but very, very shy and a little nervous. We're letting her come around in her own time. She is not a fan of leashes or her harness, but each time we go out, she seems a little better. She's also eating pretty well and we found some treats she likes! :)

In other news, I made the first blocks for the Modern Stash Bee- January is my month, so I'm going to make a quilt for my stepdad. He is a huge ocean lover, so I picked an ocean-y palette. I'm excited to see this one come together. (I have at least 3 quilts that need to be put together before this one, but there is something about a new project, isn't there?!)

Merry Christmas to you!

Sewing and eating brownies...

Not a bad way to spend a Saturday, right?

I am sewing this (blocks made by the Grace group at do.Good Stitches.). This is our quilt for July. Ahem... our quilter is seriously late, but it is finally coming together! Sorry for the blurry photo- I will take an better one tomorrow. These blocks were made using fabric scraps sent to us by one of our members- they are fun crazy blocks. I am working on ripping off the paper backing. After that, this slacker is ready to get the back put together and finally quilt. I have to finish before I start putting together our November blocks!

As for the brownies, I would like to share this recipe. You should try it. They are quite good while addressing Christmas cards.

Hope you are having a good Saturday!
